SBCC strategies and related skills are equally important alongside technical knowledge; but despite the need, there is limited availability of SBCC capacity development initiatives. In keeping with this need, the TARANG SBCC Capacity Building E-Hub has an E-learning component which has been developed focusing on nation-wide capacity building.
Need for Capacity Building on SBCC
The approach of SBCC applies to all thematic areas of development including Health, Nutrition, Sanitation, Education and Protection. In each area there are multiple factors affecting the programme implementation, these being majorly behavioural and organisational. To illustrate this, in the area of health, the causes of maternal and child mortality include:
Poorly resourced, unresponsive and culturally inappropriate health and nutrition services
Food insecurity
Inadequate feeding practices
Lack of hygiene and access to safe water or adequate sanitation
Female illiteracy
Early pregnancy
The above include behavourial causes like lack of hygiene and organisational inabilities like poor unresponsive services. As defined before, it is in these areas that SBCC would play a role in bringing the required change for human development. There is need for capacity building on SBCC for functionaries at all levels working in the child development programmes. This includes the field level service providers, programme managers driving projects at the grass roots level, and planners who are involved in designing projects.
